19. The Dangers in My Heart (Norio Sakurai, 2018 – Present)

The Dangers in My Heart manga volume 1

The Dangers in My Heart is a super cute rom-com and slice of life manga with a few dark elements.

Kyōtaro Ichikawa is an ordinary quiet middle school student with no friends. He reads novels about murders, and in his mind, he constantly fantasizes about murdering his classmates. The person he desires to murder the most is the class’s most popular girl, Anna Yamada.

Ichikawa’s favorite spot is the library, where he reads novels. Although the library is usually empty, Anna often comes to eat snacks. In the library, Ichikawa and Yamada begin to have adorable daily interactions. They start to become good friends, and soon Ichikawa realizes his feelings for Anna are much different than he had once thought.

In the first volume, Dangers in My Heart mainly looks like a slice of life romantic comedy where the main characters are going on with their daily lives. However, in the later chapters, the characters undergo a lot of character development, and their relationship progresses much more.

This is a romantic comedy manga about loving yourself and acceptance. It teaches you to love yourself first before truly loving someone else. Before loving someone, you must love yourself first and accept yourself for who you are.

Dangers in My Heart is a very well-drawn manga. It’s drawn in wonderful detail, and the characters are adorable.

18. Girlfriend, Girlfriend (Hiroyuki, 2020 – Present)

Girlfriend, Girlfriend manga volume 1

Also known as Kanojo mo Kanojo, it is a highly entertaining series that I enjoyed every minute of.

Naoya Mukai is a high school student who recently started dating his childhood friend, Saki Saki. One day, a beautiful girl named Nagisa gives a heartwarming confession to Naoya. Naoya cannot reject her and comes up with the idea of dating both Saki and Nagisa with their consent.

Nagisa agrees to his idea, but Saki is infuriated. However, with constant prodding by Naoya and Nagisa, she decides to try it out, and the three start living together. But how long can this unusual relationship between Nagisa, Naoya, and Saki workout?

It is so entertaining seeing the characters spend time together because each character is unique, stupid, and perverted, so they do the most absurd and hilarious things all the time.

But together, they make the most out of their relationship and try their best not to let the other feel left out.

Girlfriend, Girlfriend has an amusing plot, good characters, a harem-ish theme, and a well-drawn art style. Believe me, once you start reading the first chapter, you won’t be able to stop yourself from reading more.

17. The Girl I Like Forgot Her Glasses (Koume Fujichika, 2018 – Present)

The Girl I Like Forgot Her Glasses manga volume 1

If you like manga where a confident female protagonist teases a shy male protagonist, this one is for you.

Kaede Komura is a high school student who sits next to his crush, Ai Mie. Three days after meeting her, Ai forgets her glasses and can’t see anything.

Kaede stays with her throughout the day, helping her study or find her shoes. Lucky for Kaede, Ai has a habit of forgetting her glasses often. The two start to become closer as they spend more time together. Kaede’s feelings for Ai are increasing every day, but how does Ai feel about him?

Kaede is very shy, but Ai is straightforward and confident. She doesn’t feel nervous about getting close to him physically and says what she thinks.

The two characters have the funniest interactions with each other. With Kaede being a sweetheart and Ai being very adorable, it seems impossible for love not to bloom between them.

The manga’s story is simplistic yet unique. It’s a heart-warming high school romantic comedy and slice-of-life manga with a progressive storyline and side characters, which only adds to the comedy of this manga.

16. Please Go Home! Akutsu-San (Taichi Nagaoka, 2019 – Present)

Have you ever experienced a gorgeous girl forcing herself into your house? Well, our main character, Kōta Ōyama, did.

Ōyama is an ordinary high school student who is inexperienced with girls. Riko Akutsu is his classmate who sits next to him; she’s a carefree girl who’s mostly slacking off or hanging out with her friends.

Ōyama wants to keep away from her. But surprisingly, Akutsu one day shows up at his home uninvited. After finding out he lives alone, she decides to make his room her everyday hangout spot.

Please go home! Akutsu-san is a bingeworthy manga. Every chapter brings something new and exciting to hook you right in. There are currently 100+ chapters (over 5 volumes) of this manga, with more to be written.

Ōyamu may act annoyed at Akutsu’s actions, but he’s a young boy and enjoys Akutsu’s sexual jokes more than he thinks.

It’s an addicting romantic comedy manga that will make you wish for an Akutsu in your life too.

If you can read Japanese, you can find the Japanese edition of volume 1 on Amazon: 帰ってください! 阿久津さん (1) – Please Go Home! Akutsu-San (Japanese Edition)

15. My Senpai is Annoying (Shiro Manta, 2017 – Present)

My Senpai is Annoying manga volume 1

This manga is so wholesome it literally took my sadness away in 15 minutes.

Futuba Igarashi is a hardworking office worker devoted to her job. However, she’s tiny and looks like a child. Her senpai, Harumi Takeda, annoys her daily because she is short. He laughs loudly, pats her on her head, and treats her like a child.

Yet, he’s extremely caring towards her. Igarashi always acts annoyed but deep down, she’s hiding her feelings for him.

My Senpai is Annoying is a slow-paced manga, but this manga isn’t about the story; it’s about the experience. In every chapter, you will enjoy jokes and romance between the characters. Every day, Takeda teases Igarashi, and she looks like the cutest Tsundere ever.

There is a second couple in this story too, so you’ll get a good dose of romance with this series.

My Senpai is Annoying is a romantic comedy with many loving characters. The manga became so popular that it won a manga award for the web manga category in 2018.

14. Fly Me to the Moon (Kenjiro Hata, 2018 – Present)

Fly Me to the Moon manga volume 1

Nasa Yuzaki is a studious student focused on applying to Japan’s top high school. On a snowy day, Yuzaki sees a beautiful girl and falls in love with her at first sight. While trying to approach her, Yuzaki gets hit by a bus.

Luckily, he saved that girl, who is named Tsukasa. Before passing out, Yuzaki confesses his love to Tsukasa and promises to marry her. However, Yuzaki doesn’t see the girl for two years after that incident. He decides not to go to high school, moves out, and begins working.

Every day Yuzaki hopes to see Tsukasa again. Then one day, she suddenly turns up at his door and asks him to marry him officially. That begins the rom-com between this young, innocent couple. However, there is something mysterious about this girl which Yuzaki doesn’t know yet.

Fly Me to the Moon is a manga that hooked me from the first chapter. It has one thing which many rom-coms lack; an engaging story.

Every day, the couple who barely know each other try to figure out how marriage works; this makes for some hilarious situations. The best part is that this rom-com also has supernatural elements, slowly revealed throughout the manga.

This is one of the few current manga that doesn’t revolve around a high school theme.  Fly me to the Moon is a sweet, young, romantic comedy with a mix of the supernatural genre that makes it even more fun to read.

You can find the first volume of this great series here on Amazon: Fly Me to the Moon, Vol. 1

You can get other volumes of this manga here: Fly Me to the Moon manga series

13. Lovely Complex (Aya Nakahara, 2001 – 2006)

Lovely Complex manga volume 1

Lovely Complex is a relatively older title, but it is such a good rom-com that this list wouldn’t have been complete without it. It was even the winner Shogakukan Manga Award for shojo manga in 2004.

Risa Koizumi is 172cm tall, which is too tall for Japanese girls. Similarly, her classmate Atsushi Ōtani is 156 cm which is short for Japanese men. Due to their height, they are often made fun of by others.

The duo becomes interested in each other’s friends and works together to win the hearts of their crushes. Things take a turn when their crushes fall for each other instead. This leaves Risa and Ōtani heartbroken, but this makes them become good friends.

Lovely Complex is a hilarious love story between a couple who dislikes each other at first. As Risa and Ōtani spend more time together, they realize how similar they are to each other.

Lovely Complex is a well-paced manga with relatable characters and realistic scenarios. Filled with laughter and romance, this manga is a must-read for all romantic comedy fans.

12. Boarding School Juliet (Yōsuke Kaneda, 2015 – 2019)

Boarding School Juliet manga volume 1

Boarding School Juliet is set in an elite school with students from two rival countries called “the Nation of Touwa” and “Principality of West.”

Students from Touwa reside in the Black Dogs dorm, and the West students live in the White Cats dorm. The leader of Black Dogs, Romio Inuzuka, falls in love with the leader of White Cats, Juliet Persia. The two secretly start dating, with Romio promising her to change this cruel world.

How long will these lovers be able to hide their relationship?

Boarding School Juliet is a rom-com that shows the everyday struggles of Romio and Juliet as they try to spend time together while hiding their relationship.

Kissing each other isn’t easy, with their dorm members constantly barging in and ruining their moments. EThe two find creative ways to spend time together.

I enjoyed reading this manga because apart from the romance and comedy, there are quite a few action scenes too. Also, this series is one of the few rom-com manga with such a detailed art style. The well-drawn backgrounds and character designs make the reading experience much more enjoyable.

If you haven’t already guessed, this manga is a spin-off of Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet, so if you’re a fan of his stories, you will surely enjoy this.

11. Rent-A-Girlfriend (Reiji Miyajima, 2017 – Present)

Rent-A-Girlfriend manga volume 1

Kazuya Kinoshita is a college student who gets dumped by his first-ever girlfriend. To move on, he uses an online dating app to rent a girlfriend, where he meets a beautiful girl named Chizuru Mizuhara.

Despite having a wonderful date, Kazuya gives her a low rating. On their second date, he sees Chizuru’s angry side but still takes her to the hospital to visit his sick grandmother. Kazuya’s family is impressed with Kazuya’s “girlfriend.”

Things get more complicated when Kazuya frequently rents Chizuru so he can keep lying to his friends and family. Little does Kazuya know that his lies will cost him much more than just money.

Rent a Girlfriend is a series with a new, modern concept which is why it catches your attention from the very first chapter. This manga is interesting as it talks about the real business of renting a girlfriend in Japan. It became so popular that by December 2021, it had over 10 million copies in circulation.

The art in this manga is gorgeous. Since it is also a harem manga, we see loads of beautifully drawn and dressed girls and lots of fan service.

While Rent a Girlfriend isn’t everyone’s type of manga, it is worth reading because the drama, harem, comedy, and romance make it extremely fun to read.

10. My Monster Secret (Eiji Masuda, 2013 – 2017)

My Monster Secret manga volume 1

Asahi Kuromine is an ordinary high school student with a huge problem; he cannot lie or keep a secret. The only secret he never revealed to anyone is his crush on the mysterious and beautiful girl, Yōko Shiragami.

Asahi finally gets the courage to confess his love to Yōko. After class, Asahi searches for Yōka to confess his love but discovers her secret: Yōko is actually a vampire.

Asahi must now keep this huge secret because otherwise, Yōko will have to leave forever. Can Asahi’s loose lips manage to keep this huge secret?

My Monster Secret has romance and comedy mixed with fantasy and supernatural elements. The plot is unique, and you get to see different characters who aren’t human.

Although the main characters are a “few cards short of a deck,” struggling to keep their own secret, it’s funny to see how Asahi tries his best to keep his mouth shut. This manga later progresses into being a harem, so you’ll get to see multiple genres in one series.

Masuda has drawn this manga using a classic, yet different type of art style in a good way, which makes My Monster Secret look artistic.

The comedy is so good in this manga that you’ll smile while reading it. This series had 1.5 million copies in print by 2016.

9. Tomo-chan Is a Girl! (Fumita Yanagida, 2015 – 2019)

Tomo-chan Is a Girl! manga volume 1

Tomo Aizawa is a tomboy in love with her childhood friend, Junichirō Kubota. The two spent their childhood playing together and fighting, so he always thinks of her as just another “guy” friend.

When Aizawa confesses her love to him, Jun calls her “bro” and doesn’t understand her feelings. Aizawa wishes to make him see her as a girl one day. But how can she do that?

I instantly fell in love with this manga because, as a tomboy, I could totally relate to the main character’s feelings.

Tomo-chan Is a Girl shows the hilarious friendship between the tomboy Aizawa and Jun. Jun is always casually touching Aizawa without realizing she’s grown up into a woman, which makes it more difficult for Aizawa to control her feelings for him.

Aizawa’s reactions to Jun’s actions and behavior are so funny you’d be laughing out loud while reading it. The best part about this is that the supporting characters, Aizawa’s girlfriends, are so straightforward and loyal to Aizawa that their actions make this series even more hilarious.

Tomo-chan Is a Girl is a manga that checks all boxes required to be a must-read rom-com. It has excellent artwork, loving characters, awesome humor, and romance. It’s a finished series with 8 volumes, so you’ll have a long and fun journey while reading it.

Volume 1 of Tomo-chan Is a Girl! can be found on Amazon here: Tomo-chan is a Girl! Vol. 1

8. Last Game (Shinobu Amano, 2011 – 2016)

Last Game manga volume 1

Naoto Yanagi is the heir of a wealthy businessman. He’s proud of himself for being the elementary school’s top student. That is until a poor girl who doesn’t say much named Mikoto Kujō transfers to his school. Mikoto is better than Naoto in athletics and academics. He always competes with her but never wins.

After being defeated by Mikoto in middle and high school, he decides to have one last game with her in college; to win her heart and break it. Will Mikoto succeed in his last game, or will his plans take an interesting twist?

Although Last Game sounds like a typical shojo rom-com, it manages to be one of the best ones out there. I binge-read it overnight because the author constructed the plot and characters so that you will always be curious about what happens next.

Last Game is a perfectly paced manga with a lot of character development, comedy, and romance, which will melt your heart. I enjoyed it a lot, and I’m sure you will too. You’ll understand why I recommended it by reading the first few chapters.

If you can read Japanese, you can get volume 1 of the Japanese edition of this manga on Amazon: ラストゲーム 1 – Last Game 1 (Japanese Edition)

7. Teasing Master Takagi-San (Sōichirō Yamamoto, 2013 – Present)

Teasing Master Takagi-San manga volume 1

This is probably one of the sweetest and most wholesome romantic comedy manga out there, which revolves around teasing.

Nishikata and Takagi are two middle school students who sit next to each other. Every day, Takagi (girl) uses mischievous pranks to tease Nishikata (boy)and laugh at his reactions.

When Nishikata tries to take revenge, Takagi turns the tables by finding his weaknesses and using them against him. A few times, Nishikata does manage to win, but Takagi’s cool and calm reactions don’t make him feel that he did.

Every day, the two enjoy winning and losing against each other, but is there romance blooming in between these childish games?

Teasing Master Takagi-San may sound similar to other rom-com manga. However, there’s no bullying or exploitation of the main character here. Instead, Takagi always teases Nishikata in a playful and non-offensive way, which is what I love about it.

The plot is simple, but the manga doesn’t get boring at any point and keeps you smiling.

Teasing Master Takagi-San will show you two middle schoolers having the time of their lives with each other.

I’ll warn you; the manga is addicting! In fact, it has sold millions of copies and won a Shogakukan Manga Award.

6. His and Her Circumstances (Masami Tsuda, 1996 – 2005)

His and Her Circumstances manga volume 1

Yukino Miyazawa appears to be a perfect and popular student. In reality, she is narcissistic and spoiled and couldn’t be any more different from the “fake” personality she showcases in school. She enjoys being top of the class, but a student named Soichiro Arima transfers to her school and instantly becomes her rival.

Yukino hates Arima and rejects his love confession, but Arima accidentally sees her true side one day and blackmails her to do his schoolwork. When Yukino becomes tired of being blackmailed by him, Arima confesses he only did this to spend time with her.

Soon, Yukino realizes Arima also has a different side to him and falls in love.

His and Her Circumstances show a realistic portrayal of human relationships. Although this manga has a lot of comedy, it also has drama and focuses on serious aspects of life.

The manga focuses on the stories of Arima, Yukino, and their friends. As their relationship progresses, Arima’s more complex and dark side of his personality is revealed and spices things up.

But with love and care from Yukino and their friends, Arima is able to move on from his past trauma and trust the people who care about him.

His and Her Circumstances shows the importance of love and friendships in overcoming life’s adversities. It is an honest manga that is worth its hype.

5. My Little Monster (Robico, 2008 – 2013)

My Little Monster manga volume 1

Shizuku Mizutani is a high school student whose life revolves around studying. Next to her sits Haru Yoshida, a boy who rarely attends school.

When Shizuku meets Haru to deliver notes, he instantly calls her his friend and starts coming to high school because of her.

Known as a rowdy and scary student, Haru has no other friends, just like Shizuku. Eventually, Haru confesses his love to Shizuku. Shizuku slowly realizes she’s in love with Haru too. As they spend more time together, Shizuku discovers much more to Haru than what seems on the surface.

My Little Monster is a manga with the perfect balance between romance and comedy. I love this manga because of its characters. Unlike other manga, the characters in this manga are aware of their feelings from the start.

Shizuku and Haru are shy at times, but they openly convey their feelings to each other, making you feel satisfied while reading the manga.

My Little Monster is a little unconventional series but has great pacing. It is a widely popular manga, having 6.1 million copies in print by 2018. The plot gets even more amusing with each chapter, and since it’s a finished manga, you don’t have to wait for new chapters to see the ending of this lovely couple.

4. My Dress-Up Darling (Shinichi Fukuda, 2018 – Present)

My Dress-Up Darling manga volume 1

Wakana Gojo is an antisocial high school student whose only secret hobby is making Hina dolls. One day, while Gojo was secretly making doll costumes with his school’s sewing machine, Marin Kitagawa, the school’s most popular girl, sees him.

Marin asks Gojo to make cosplay costumes for her. Despite having no experience in cosplay, Gojo agrees after seeing Marin’s passion for it. From that day onwards, Gojo’s life completely changes.

My Dress-up Darling is nothing like any other romance manga. The cosplay theme makes this manga light and fun. Throughout the manga, you get to see Marin and Gojo work on various cosplays together, and Marin’s costumes are so good you’ll keep wanting to see more of them.

The best part of this series is its artwork. There is a ton of attention to detail, and the artist has drawn the characters beautifully. I mean, just look at Marin’s gorgeous eyes.

My Dress-up Darling excels in terms of plot as well. We see the characters undergo so much development, and together, they bring out a happier and better version of themselves.

Whether you’re interested in cosplaying or not, this manga will entertain you either way. You’ll surely enjoy this if you’re a fan of titles like Don’t Toy With Me, Miss Nagatoro.

3. Maid Sama! (Hiro Fujiwara, 2005 – 2013)

Maid Sama! manga volume 1

Even almost a decade after its release, Maid Sama!  remains one of the best romantic comedies ever made.

Misaki Ayuzawa is the president of Seika High School, a school with 80% boys. Ayuzawa is at the top in studies and sports. She is strict in keeping the boys in check, which is why she is called the “Demon President.”

However, she has a big secret: she works part-time in a maid café. One day, the school’s most popular boy, Takumi Usui, visits the maid café and sees her working there. He starts visiting her every day at the café and spending more time with her in school. But what is the motive behind his attention toward Ayuzawa?

Maid Sama! adds more spice and comedy to the manga by using the “maid” theme. We get to see cute maid girls in this manga, and the romance will make your heart melt.

Usui is one of the best male-lead characters in a romantic comedy manga, and Ayuzawa is not your usual weak, shy character; instead, she’s very strong.

Apart from showing the romance between the main characters, the manga also has hilarious scenes of Ayuzawa handling all the naughty school boys by herself and fulfilling her duties as a president.

Maid Sama! is a series that will stay in your heart forever. You can read it again and again and won’t get tired of it.

2. Horimiya (Hiroki Adachi, 2011-2021)

Horimiya manga volume 1

Kyoko Hori is a popular high school girl who excels in her studies and sports and is loved by her classmates. On the other hand, Izumi Miyamura is an introverted student with an “emo” appearance.

Surprisingly, Hori is an entirely different person outside of school. She dresses casually, does housework, and looks after her younger brother. Miyamura also has a secret; piercings and tattoos all over his body.

One day, Hori and Miyamura accidentally see the actual sides of each other, and that starts the journey of their rare and unbreakable bond.

Like the series His and Her CircumstancesHorimiya shows the characters in their private and public lives. I’m sure many of us can relate to acting differently when in the public eye.

Although Hori and Miyamura seem different at first, they are a lot like each other because they struggle to be their authentic selves in public.

Horimiya is a sweet romance story of high schoolers. The manga also focuses on the stories of its supporting characters, which adds more drama to this series. There are even some serious moments that will resonate with many of you.

Horimiya has over 7 million copies in print, according to Hiroki’s official Twitter account. You need to put this series on your reading bucket list.

1. Kaguya-sama: Love is War (Aka Akasaka, 2015 – Present)

Kaguya-sama: Love is War manga volume 1

If I had to pick only one rom-com manga to read for the rest of my life, I would choose this one. It is a fantastic manga series with more than 15 million copies in circulation (as of April 2021).

Miyuki Shirogane is the student council president at Shuchiin Academy. Alongside him is the daughter of a wealthy businessman, the smart and beautiful Kaguya Shinomiya. The whole school looks up to them and considers them the perfect couple.

However, the two are not dating. Shirogane and Kaguya are secretly in love with one another but are too prideful to admit it, believing that the one who confesses first loses the war of love.

Using clever and sometimes absurd tactics, Kaguya and Shirogane attempt to make the other person confess their love first. Who will win this battle of love?

Kaguya-sama is a war for love using only wits as weapons. Every day, the characters battle to see who can make the other person confess their feelings. Other student council members make it even more difficult for their plans to succeed. In fact, one of the characters named Fujiwara often sabotages their plans, and her unexpected actions are incredibly hilarious.

Kaguya-sama has an excellent plot, romance, laugh-out-loud humor, lovable characters, and plot twists, making it impossible to put the book down. I cannot recommend this manga enough.
